Local Bellingham Artist Paints Irises in our Classroom!

This was the entrance to our classroom in the summer of 2010.

A little bit of paint and a vision started to bring the entrance to life.

Then Pat painted the irises.
A kinder garden - for kindergarten.

The old blackboard area was about to change dramatically.

Pat Renaud began her magic.
When she found out about the transformations that were occurring in our classroom, she wanted to be part of it.

Painting is complete, and the next phase is happening.
The whiteboards are up.
Finished and ready for the school year begin!
Thanks Pat, for your support with this project.

Summer Classroom Transformation

For first couple of weeks, I spent quite a bit of time simply painting. I found some economical paint for these shelves at the local Habitat for Humanity Restore...

The old blackboards were removed.

The school district was able to get the closet/garage door removed! Ahh so much space!

Then I removed shelving and then spent hours upon hours removing the archaic hardware.
DIY was the only way to go!

Craigslist and the Restore became a huge part of my summer and it was a fun challenge.

Math Quiz: The previous hooks had been 6 inches apart. That meant that every time a kindergartner got near a backpack or coat, something would fall off. I calculated that they would need a minimum of 8 1/2 inches time the amount of kindergartners per class....equals a new set of shelves so everyone would have a place.

I used these existing shelves and added a backing for backpack and coathooks.

More painting and constructing.

This classroom needed some color and life!

Enter green paint with purple trim!

The entryway had been dismal and institutional looking,
so I painted and added items not traditionally found in a school setting.

As people enter, I want them to feel invited.
Walking sticks are the easiest of class pets,
and they eat the invasive ivy that we find at the school's nature trail.

The next phase was the beginning of organization,
so that materials were organized to be accessible.

Art storage in progress...

There is too much plastic in early childhood centers, so I used baskets wherever I could.

Setting the stage for reading, music, and inquiry...

Welcome to Our Classroom!

Hello and welcome to our classroom! My name is Joy Patterson. I live in Bellingham, and happily commute to Conway to teach and work with our wonderful kindergartners. We currently have 21 students in our morning class, and 20 students in our afternoon class. I am so energized and excited to return to Kindergarten! I have taught preschool, multiage primary, and worked with kindergartners since 1993. I also taught music education at Whatcom Community College. Kindergarten is truly the place where I want to be, and I want to create a fantastic program for our students. As part of my vision, I created this blog to keep parents, friends and families updated on Kindergarten happenings and to let you in on what I have been working on to date.

My first task was transforming the classroom which I felt needed some big updates and organization. So the summer before school began, I set to work. The following are some "before" photos...

This was the closet area, featuring hooks for backpacks and coats.
Children had a number that they would use for the year.

This was the original garage door in the classroom - complete with three-foot spring.
It prevented use of the top four feet of vertical space.

This was the original blackboard from 1959.
Little had been done to update the classroom since then.

The computers in the classroom were donated from Stanwood High School.
Since we didn't have computers in the classroom, we inherited their throwaways.

This was how the storage area was organized.
